Coronavirus News Highlights: Global tally crosses 5.8 million, India reports 1.72 lakh cases

Today is the 66th day of India’s nationwide lockdown meant to curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. As we approach May 31, the Centre is expected to put out details of a possible lockdown extension soon. Confirmed COVID-19 cases in India stand at 1,65,799. The death toll from the outbreak in India is at 4,706. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat have reported the highest number of cases.

Globally, there have been over 58 lakh confirmed cases of COVID-19. At least 3.59 lakh people have died so far. The United States, Brazil, Russia, the United Kingdom and Spain are the most-affected countries. Scroll down to track LIVE updates and happenings of the day on Coronavirus:

    Fourteen more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Himachal Pradesh on Friday, taking the number of coronavirus cases in the state to 296, officials said. Meanwhile, 10 more persons in the state including four each in Hamirpur and Kangra and two in Una were cured of the disease, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) RD Dhiman said. Of the fresh cases, eight were reported from Hamirpur, five from Kangra and one from Una, he added. (PTI)

    Four more persons died of coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh on Friday taking the death toll due to the disease to 201 in the state, while 275 fresh cases pushed the total number of COVID-19 cases to 7,445 officials said."The total number of cases reported so far are 7,445 including 4,410 who have been treated and discharged while there are 2,834 active cases. The death toll in the state has reached 201," an official statement said here.
    The number of active cases includes 2,012 migrant workers who recently returned to the state, a senior official said.

    Haryana recorded the highest single-day jump in coronavirus cases on Friday with 217 fresh infections, 115 of which were from the state's worst-hit Gurgaon district, according to the state health department bulletin.Gurgaonhas cumulative 520 cases.

    The total coronavirus cases in the state stood at 1,721 of which 940 have recovered and the rest were undergoing treatment, it said.Of the 19 coronavirus-related deaths in the state so far, Faridabad has maximum of seven fatalities and Gurgaon three, according to the state health department bulletin.With an increase in the number of cases on Friday, the state's recovery rate came down from nearly 60 percent a couple of days ago to 54.62 percent.     With 372 new patients foundin Gujarat since the previous evening, 253 of them in Ahmedabad district, the number of coronavirus cases in the state rose to
    15,944, said a release by the Health Department on Friday.Twenty patients succumbed to the infection during the period, taking the death toll in the state to 980, it said.

    The state government also announced that it had so far conducted 2,01,481 COVID-19 tests as per the Indian Council ofMedical Research (ICMR) guidelines. 608 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recovered patients to 8,609, the release said.468 patients recovered in Ahmedabad district alone,followed by the 35 in Surat and 18 each in Kutch and Vadodara.     Coronavirus in West Bengal LIVE updates |

    West Bengal reported seven more COVID-19 fatalities on Friday, pushing the death toll due to the disease in the state beyond the 300-mark, while 277 fresh coronavirus cases were registered, a bulletin issued by the health department said.

    Of the 302 deaths, 72 patients passed away due to comorbidities and the novel coronavirus was "incidental" in these cases, it said. West Bengal has a total of 4,813 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far, of which 2,736 are active. Kolkata accounted for the maximum number of fresh cases at 71, followed by 54 from North 24 Parganas district. (PTI)
