Hello and welcome to Moneycontrol’s coverage of Cyclone Amphan, pronounced as UM-PUN -- a super cyclone -- weakened into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on May 19 but still packed enough force to pulverise coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal where lakhs of people were evacuated from vulnerable areas and shifted to safety.
The cyclonic storm lay centred about 170 km south of West Bengal's Digha as an extremely severe cyclonic storm over west central Bay of Bengal and is likely to make landfall near Sunderbans between afternoon and evening on May 20, the MeT department said.
In a bid to safeguard people, West Bengal has mounted one of its biggest evacuation exercises by moving more than three lakh people to safer places. Catch LIVE updates here:

West Bengal has been affected by cyclone Amphan than the coronavirus pandemic, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said addressing a press conference. She said that damages due to super cyclone Amphan could be worth Rs 1 lakh crore.
19 NDRF teams have been deployed in coastal areas of West Bengal. NDRF teams assisted the local administration in the safe evacuation of more than 5 lakh people to safer places, till now: Public Relations, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) (ANI)

Over one million consumers in the coastal areas of Bangladesh were without power after strong winds snapped electricity lines and many houses destroyed as the country was hit by a powerful cyclone on Wednesday that killed at least one person.
"More than one million consumers in at least 17 associations of the Rural Electrification Board have lost electricity," bdnews24.com reported.
Apart from this, almost 40,000 customers of West Zone Power Distribution Company have lost electricity supply. (PTI)

Odisha government has asked the district collectors to submit cyclone Amphan damage assessment reports within 48 hours. The cyclone has caused widespread damage in the coastal districts of the state. (IANS)

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday expressed concern over the situation arising out of cyclone Amphan in West Bengal and Odisha.
The Vice President's Secretariat tweeted saying Naidu has expressed concern over the situation arising out of the cyclone.
"He spoke to the Union Minister Babul Supriyo, and Rajya Sabha MPs Manas Ranjan Bhunia & Sukhendu Sekhar Roy to ascertain the impact in West Bengal following the landfall of the cyclone," the VP Secretariat said. (PTI)
