Steve Smith, David Warner banned from playing for Australia, IPL for 1 year

Disgraced after being caught red-handed for indulging in ball-tampering, Steve Smith and David Warner have been banned from playing cricket for Australia for one year.  Cameron Bancroft, who was seen scraping the ball with a yellow object, has been suspended from international cricket for nine month.

Earlier, the Australian cricket Board had suspended the three from playing in the final Test match. The trio have been given seven days to appeal against the decision.

Smith, who had led the national side since 2015, confessed to reporters in Cape Town on Saturday that the ball-tampering had been orchestrated by himself and senior players.

Bancroft was tasked with implementing the plan and was duly caught on camera using the tape.

Smith had been charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which could lead to a one-match ban and a 100 percent fine of his match fee. Bancroft had been fined 75 percent of his match fee.

Banned from IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had said earlier that Smith and Warner would be barred from playing in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) if they are banned by Cricket Australia. The latest decision would mean that the duo will be barred from featuring in the lucrative Twenty20 tournament.

Warner’s IPL team SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) had announced on Wednesday that he would not lead the side and a replacement would be named soon. Warner had captained the side from 2015 and had taken them to the title in 2016.

On Sunday, Smith and Warner had stepped down as the captain and vice-captain of the Australian cricket team during the third Test match against South Africa in Cape Town.

Tim Paine was officially declared as the 46^th Test captain for the national side, on Wednesday morning.

Matthew Renshaw, Joe Burns and Glenn Maxwell were called in as replacements for the banned trio and will arrive in South Africa in the next 24 hours.
