The largest Chinese commercial vehicle-maker Beiqi Foton Motor today said it will source engines from Cummins for its upcoming Pune facility that will be ready by early 2013.
"Cummins is providing engines for our China facilities now. Therefore, there is more likelihood of we sourcing engines from Cummins for our India facility," Beiqi Foton Motor India Executive Vice-President R Shankar told PTI here.
The Pune-based Cummins India is manufacturing diesel and natural gas engines for power generation, industrial and automotive markets. Currently, it supplies diesel engines to the major domestic commercial vehicle makers.
Beiqi Foton Motor has signed an MoU with Maharashtra to invest Rs 1,676 crore in the domestic market. The company is looking for around 250-300 acre land near Pune to set up the facility. The plant will have an installed capacity of 1,00,000 units per year.
"We are in talks with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) for acquiring land near Pune. We will get the required land at Chakan within two months," he said.
The largest Chinese commercial vehicle maker plans to bring its entire product range, including light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, to the domestic market.
"We are planning to bring in the entire range of products here," Shankar said.
On the late arrival into the already crowded domestic CV industry, Shankar parried a direct answer and instead said, "we know this market very well. We are leaders in China and want to establish ourself here."
The Shanghai Stock Exchange-listed company has 14 plants in China and has JVs and partnerships with Cummins Inc of US and Dialmer Trucks of Germany.
